Novel, family saga, travelogue, political testimony... Three Beautiful Cuban Women is all of that and perhaps something more. It is the story of the Blasco Milián sisters, whom the Castro Revolution separates and pits against each other; a story of roots and exile, of prosperity and ruin, of love and death. It is a vivid account of numerous trips to Havana over thirty years, revealing the political and social upheavals of the country visited, but above all, the ideological transformation of the visitor. It is an inventory of Gonzalo Celorio's encounters, disagreements, and reunions with Cuba, the land of his ancestors. It is a chronicle that moves from fascination to disillusionment, that offers criticism born of love and love born of criticism, and that does not succumb to the dichotomies that have torn the country apart. And it is, finally, a literary tribute to many Cuban writers who, from officialdom or from marginalization, have enriched the literature of the Caribbean island: Carpentier, Lezama, Eliseo Diego, Dulce María Loynaz.
