The Franco regime lasted long enough to construct myths and carve out silences. One of the most significant myths concerned the so-called "years of hunger"—the long postwar period (1939–1952) that defined the lives of Spaniards following the Civil War. Amidst economic stagnation and widespread destitution, the dictatorship attributed the situation to the ravages of war, international isolation, and a supposedly "persistent drought." This book dismantles the justifications offered by the Franco regime while also revealing one of its greatest secrets: a devastating famine occurred during certain years of that era (1939–42 and 1946), claiming the lives of more than 200,000 Spaniards. Much like other famines in interwar Europe, Franco’s famine was driven by political factors linked to the economic policies adopted, the regime's alignment with the Axis powers during World War II, the nature of the dictatorship itself, and widespread corruption.
