When she was little, Dani couldn't help but follow her mom's best friend's adorable son everywhere she went. Funny, a little quirky, and with a heart of gold, Alec was always happy to hang out with her. They were inseparable until Dani moved away. Alec promised they'd stay in touch, but they didn't. Years later, Dani has returned to Minnesota for her senior year of high school. Despite having to deal with the devastating aftermath of her parents' divorce, she wouldn't mind reconnecting with the warm and friendly Alec (and even asking him why he stopped writing to her years ago). And the place Dani once held is now occupied by his many female fans, who are crazy about him. And Alec is thrilled. Dani is determined to stay away from Alec until a series of unfortunate events brings them together again and forces them to pretend to be a couple. Once reunited, these former best friends must pick up where they left off, unravel some complex family secrets, and confront their feelings for each other, as well as the real reason Alec has kept his distance from Dani all these years.
