This is the story of Jana, a woman born in Prague who, persecuted by the communist regime, leaves her country with her husband and two children to start a new life in the United States. We know the historical events. But what Monika Zgustova describes with extraordinary sensitivity in this novel are the devastating effects that exile has on the innermost being of those forced into it. And at the same time, the possibility of rebirth. Jana tells us her story with a voice that blends humor and poetry, nostalgia and pain, in the final years of her life, when she finally manages to become the person she had always wanted to be.
