Seft, a flint-miner with a unique talent, travels across the Great Plain in the heat of summer to witness the rituals marking the start of a new year. He is there to trade his stones at the solstice celebrations and to meet Neen, the girl he loves. Neen’s prosperous family also offers him a way to escape the brutality of his father and brothers by welcoming him into their community of herders. Joia, Neen’s sister, is an idealistic priestess with remarkable leadership qualities. As a child, she is captivated by the Summer Solstice Ceremony and dreams of a spectacular new monument built from the world’s most imposing stones. Yet, unrest is brewing in the hills and forests of the Great Plain. Joia’s vision of a massive stone circle—brought together by the divided tribes of the Great Plain—will inspire Seft and become his life’s work. However, as drought ravages the land, mistrust grows among the herders, the farmers, and the forest dwellers... and an act of savage violence sparks an all-out war.
