As a witch living in the walled city of Chernograd, Kosara is well-versed in treating lycanthrope bites, negotiating with kikimoras, and hunting blood-sucking upyrs. There is only one monster she cannot defeat: her ex, the Zmey—known as the Tsar of Monsters. She has challenged him many times, and now he is hunting her down. Betrayed by someone close to her, Kosara’s only chance of survival is to trade away her shadow—the source of her powers—in exchange for a way out of the city. Unfortunately, Kosara soon falls victim to the wasting sickness that kills shadowless witches, and the only cure is to reclaim her magic. To find it, she must rely on the help of a suspiciously honorable inspector. In a city where everyone looks out only for themselves, can Kosara trust someone to help her overcome the greatest problem from her past?
