In classrooms around the world, texts that until recently were considered the sacred pillars of Western civilization are being critically examined. The ancient Greeks and Romans are not exempt from this scrutiny, as they have been seen as the origin of the racism and sexism that have marked our culture for centuries. Given this, how can we still maintain a dialogue with the classics? Maurizio Bettini argues that it is possible to achieve a balance between respecting differences and preserving the cultural legacy that shapes us. And that, in fact, a deeply critical review of our relationship with the unacceptable aspects of our history should be the common goal of any educational project. But for this to happen, it is essential that the conversation not be interrupted: the Greeks and Romans still have much to tell us about who we are.
