Entre visillos

*Entre visillos* portrays the atmosphere, conservatism, and underlying hypocrisy of a Spanish provincial town in the mid-20th century. Seemingly trivial conversations among the novel’s young female protagonists gradually reveal their anxieties, their fear of remaining unmarried, the monotony of their lives, their walks and early romances, the dances at the local club, and the sadness lurking beneath their boredom and lack of imagination. The arrival of a handsome new German teacher stirs in these young women a desire to break free from conformity and that oppressive atmosphere.
