The picturesque coastal town of Portneath has been home to Capelthorne’s Books for nearly a century… The shop—situated in the heart of a high street that winds crookedly down from the castle to the sea—may be a bit run-down, but for Jules Capelthorne, that dusty, off-kilter world of literary treasures is filled with cherished childhood memories. When her great-aunt Florence becomes too frail to run the business alone, Jules leaves her entry-level job at a London publishing house and returns home, determined to make the bookshop’s centenary an unforgettable celebration. Jules soon discovers that things are worse than she imagined: the shop is on the brink of bankruptcy, unlikely to even reach its hundredth anniversary, and the lease is about to expire. With a six-figure sum needed to save it, the future looks bleak. To make matters worse, the landlord is the insufferable Roman Montbeau, scion of the wealthy local family that owns half of Portneath. The Montbeaus and Capelthornes have been at odds for years, and it is clear that Roman hasn't changed; he still torments Jules just as he did in childhood. Fresh from a glittering career in New York, he is determined to shake up the town—and, unforgivably, he proves his point about Capelthorne’s being a relic of the past by opening a new bookstore right across the street: a gleaming book emporium with floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Jules may not have the Montbeaus’ budget for promotions and marketing, but she has ideas of her own—and a tenacity capable of winning over even the hardest hearts and overcoming the most impossible conflicts.
