La casa de huéspedes

Madrid, 1937. At the very moment a bomb strikes a building in the city center, near the Gran Vía, the lives of two young neighbors are changed forever. Elvira, whose parents run the boarding house on the third floor, is in France—an exile from the Civil War—when the explosion occurs. Yet, the loss of the home she so deeply longs to return to marks a decisive turning point in her destiny. Ángela, the daughter of the building’s caretakers, is present when the place where they both grew up is blown apart. It is then that she makes a decision with unforeseeable consequences: she gathers up the baby of guests who have just perished beneath the rubble and flees, assuming a false identity. Neither Elvira nor Ángela imagines that their paths will cross again, nor that another boarding house will become the meeting place for a new generation of women who, like them, must learn to turn pain into strength and survive on the fragile hope of a better future.
