In 263 BC, China is convulsed by the violent Warring States period—a conflict that has raged since ancient times. Meanwhile, young Fengying, the daughter of Zhao potters, is sold as a concubine to the mysterious merchant Lü Buwei. This turn of events drags her—against her will—into the heart of palace intrigue, as Lü seeks to amass wealth by engineering Prince Yiren’s rise to power. Lü does not hesitate to align himself with the disgraced young prince whom everyone in Zhao loathes, even though doing so binds his fate to the aristocrat’s—and even though Yiren becomes an unexpected wedge between Fengying and Lü.
