Once upon a time, four great rocks stood majestically in a remote corner of the Scottish coast. An ancient legend tells that they were erected by a grieving father to guide his daughters back home, and that he pronounced a curse upon anyone who dared to topple them, and also upon their descendants, who would scatter across the world and never find their way back. When Charles Blackmore decides to topple the four imposing rocks that stand in the garden of his mansion in Skara, on the Scottish coast, he defies the legend that condemns to a curse anyone who dares to bring down the stones. Shortly afterward, his wife dies, his fortune dwindles, and he disappears, leaving his four daughters destitute. Iris, the eldest, is convinced that the only person who could help them is her mother's younger brother, whose last known whereabouts are in Sri Lanka, and in 1931 she embarks as a lady's companion on a journey that will take her there. In the present day, Roz, a young Australian woman newly arrived in London, discovers a painting in an antique shop window. She feels an undeniable connection to it and soon learns that the past has a power from which one cannot easily escape.
