Ghosh argues that the extreme nature of current weather phenomena makes them particularly difficult for contemporary ways of thinking and imagining to grasp. This is clearly seen in the case of literary fiction: centuries-long storms and monstrous tornadoes seem too improbable for a serious novel, so they are automatically relegated to other genres. In historiography, the climate crisis has also led to oversimplifications. *The Great Delusion* shows that the history of carbon economics is a tangled global story with many contradictory and counterintuitive elements, and suggests that politics, like literature, has become a matter of personal moral reflection rather than a sphere of collective action. But limiting culture and politics to the individual comes at too high a price.
