Spanish wasn't born in a day, nor was it designed in an office. It has been built over more than two thousand years through conquests, migrations, misunderstandings, and a chain of phonetic changes. To understand its configuration, we have countless small clues: medieval spelling mistakes, Quevedo's rhymes, inscriptions from Latium, the capricious decisions of the nobility… and even contemporary linguistic memes.
