This volume, first published in 1889, is the first in a series of twelve fairy tale books, each named after a color, which the Scottish author Andrew Lang collected and edited over twenty-one years. It was a revolutionary series that transformed children's literature: drawing from sources as diverse as the Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault, One Thousand and One Nights, Norwegian folklore, and French folktales, he brought together endearing stories that had never before been published in English. At the time, fairy tales were considered harmful to young readers, but Lang championed their value, prompting a shift in public perception. A learned and passionate scholar of myth, folklore, and anthropology, Lang set out to preserve the purity of the tales while ensuring that future generations would have the privilege of reading the same stories he had enjoyed in his childhood.
