The Summer of Our Discontent is an attempt to demonstrate why we must resist the mutually assured destruction to which identity movements —even those disguised as just causes, such as anti-racism— lead us, and return to the principles of liberalism if we want our diverse societies to be habitable for ourselves and future generations. For this reason, the author advocates reopening —or finally opening— the liberal mind, which furious, radical, and distorting forces, on both sides of the political and cultural spectrum, have relentlessly and dangerously pressured to close. Written after the traumatic summer of 2020, when, in the midst of the pandemic and during Donald Trump's first term, George Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis, Chatterton Williams, one of today's most lucid and challenging intellectuals, attempts to reconcile the aspiration for social justice with the principles of liberalism in an increasingly hostile environment.
