For Bly, a seventeen-year-old girl living in a human village nestled between the warring kingdoms of vampires and witches, blood is synonymous with survival. Although most of the time vampires and witches maintain an uneasy truce, buying human blood to feed themselves and cast spells, for two weeks each year, peace is broken for the Rebirth Games. Humans can participate in the games, but to do so, they must choose which side to join: witches or vampires. Both sides offer life-changing fortunes, but the witches also offer to resurrect the person of their choice to whoever captures the highest-ranking vampire. The vampires, for their part, promise immortality to whoever captures the most powerful witch. For most humans, the games are a way to escape a miserable life. For Bly, they are the perfect opportunity to resurrect her sister, Elise, and to save her best friend, Emerson, who is on the brink of death. Together, Bly and Emerson devise a risky plan: to play for both sides and win both prizes—resurrection for Elise and immortality for Emerson. However, the vampire they capture awakens an unexpected passion in Bly, and she must then make a choice: get her sister back or stay with the boy who has shown her that life is much more than mere survival.
