Genjyo is a Buddhist priest in the city of Tōgenkyō, which is being ravaged by yokai who have disrupted the natural order. His superiors send him on a journey to the far west to discover what is causing this chaos and how to stop it. His companions are none other than three yokai with human souls, and together they will encounter mysteries and horrors that he must confront while questioning whether humans and yokai can truly coexist.
