In the distant future, humanity teeters on the brink of extinction. Scattered in small tribes under the care of enigmatic "Mothers," the last humans struggle to survive on an unrecognizable planet. Some children are born in factories, created from animal cells; others are nourished through photosynthesis, like plants. Perhaps the continuation of the species depends on interbreeding with these new creatures, but no one knows if the bonds and society will endure.
