Los ángeles insurrectos

As the future King Alfonso XII is about to be born, a royal wet nurse is sought. From the Pas Valley, two sisters, Alfonsa and Antoñuca, anxiously await the selection. Along with their stories, the lives of other women emerge in these pages, such as Leonora, who, longing to be a mother, works at the foundling home in Madrid; Elena, who must decide on her sexual orientation; and Gertrudis, who runs a Jerez winery. Over time, their destinies will become intertwined in Madrid, Granada, Jerez de la Frontera, Oviedo, and Santander. From loving mothers to women who do not want children, they all become rebellious angels who rewrite the 19th-century ideal of womanhood: woman, wife, and mother. They are winemakers, dentists, photographers, soldiers, directors of care facilities, midwives, ladies-in-waiting to the queen, and regents. In short, angels of a home they can barely leave.
