Un dique contra el Pacífico

Drawing on her own life, Marguerite Duras recounts in this novel the peculiar life in Indochina of a family consisting of a teenage girl named Suzanne, her brother Joseph, and their mother. Once a woman brimming with energy, the mother has tried to make a living from a farmland, but every year the Pacific Ocean floods the plain and ruins the harvest. Now, she has only one desire: to marry Suzanne off to Jo, the rather unattractive son of a wealthy land speculator. For Jo is very rich, rich enough to allow Suzanne's mother to rebuild some dikes and pay off her numerous debts.
