El Hospital de la Piedra

On the eve of the Feast of Mary Magdalene in 1467, the city of Toledo was engulfed in a bloody war due to the disputes between the conversos (Jewish converts to Christianity) and the Christian converts, led by the prominent Silva and Ayala families. These were difficult times, with the Kingdom of Castile mired in chaos and misrule. During this period, a five-year-old boy, Johan García de Laso, heir to a prosperous family of converso merchants, witnessed a terrible crime that irrevocably forced him to leave his hometown. Years later, orphaned and mistreated, but determined to reconnect with his roots, he returned to Toledo and came into contact with the Hospital de la Piedra, a charitable institution dedicated to the protection of foundling children and run by Father Santiago Romasanta, a priest who had strayed from Christian orthodoxy and who would forever shape the course of his life.
