Ever since she was old enough to understand, Valla has heard that her beauty would grant her a life others could only dream of. When the mysterious Count Leonid chooses her as his betrothed, Valla sees the perfect opportunity to escape her humdrum village. The only obstacle standing in her way is the treacherous journey through the Gottyar Forest, from which many do not return. Teeming with deadly and cunning creatures, the Gottyar quickly lives up to its reputation with an attack that leaves Valla wounded and her face battered. Finally, she reaches the castle, exhausted but relieved to be safe at last. However, things have changed. She is no longer the beautiful young woman she once was, and the Count is far from pleased… Crossing the Gottyar was a victory, but the real battle begins when she sees what awaits her within the palace walls.
