Navarre, late 1940s. The war is over, but its consequences still linger. Young Amalia's family survives by selling garlic, but the drought has devastated the crops. Amalia then has an idea: to offer her services as a messenger between villages. That seemingly small spark of entrepreneurship will be the beginning of a chain of events that will change her life. After a traumatic episode, Amalia and her parents are forced, overnight, to cross into France and settle in Biarritz, a city determined to recover its former glory after World War II. There, Amalia meets Dominique, a sophisticated French restaurateur who gives her her first big job opportunity, and John, a mysterious and charismatic American ex-soldier. With him, Amalia experiences her first great love and finds her best partner in life and business: a transport company that grows to connect southern France with Paris, Italy, and Spain. Her relationship with John deepens. But just when everything seems to fall into place, tragedy strikes. Because the journey to freedom is neither linear nor free of pain.
