What is it that our society chooses not to see? What bodies can be beaten, imprisoned, or exploited without anyone being outraged or intervening? It is where power exercises its mechanisms of repression most brazenly that the intolerable arises. That is to say: not only what happens in refugee camps or behind prison walls, but also, as Díaz Álvarez reminds us —following in the footsteps of Michel Foucault, Angela Davis, John Berger, and Richard Mosse— the complacency with which we observe cruelty without feeling repulsion, shame, or responsibility.
