Before Tom Kinkade became the "Painter of Light" and I the creator of Dinotopia, we were two unknown, penniless art students. We were sick of spending our time sitting in windowless classrooms, listening to art theory lectures. We hatched a daring plan to drop out of school and discover North America, and we documented everything in our sketchbooks. On September 16, 1980, we climbed aboard a freight train in Los Angeles and set off on an eastward journey. We made quick sketches of lumberjacks, shoemakers, and miners, and slept in cemeteries and on rooftops. This book is the result of that artistic odyssey. In the more than four decades since its first publication, urban sketching has grown ever more popular. Why? Because sketching on location is a fantastic way to expand our knowledge and visual vocabulary. However, its greatest benefit is that it allows us to connect with new places and people.
