Oona Kelly Webster has much to be thankful for. She's a stunning woman, with red hair and green eyes, a wonderful family, and a job she loves as an editor at a prestigious publishing house. To celebrate their silver wedding anniversary, she and her husband, Charles, plan a trip to France. But then Charles confesses that he's been having an affair for a year and leaves Oona for his younger lover, a man. Devastated, Oona decides to travel to France without Charles. She arrives in a charming village an hour from Paris and settles into the house she's rented, La Belle Florence, named after the king's mistress for whom it was built. Just when she seems to be recovering, she receives another blow: the merger of her company will leave her jobless. Oona feels her life crumbling around her; in a matter of months, she's lost her partner, the father of her children, and her job. The only thing that encourages her is that she can stay in France, where the simple life in a beautiful environment begins to heal her little by little, as does the company of the little white dog she rescues and her kind neighbor, originally from Trinidad, who delights her with his frankness and warmth.
