The protagonist is Guts (Gatsu), a mercenary who began his journey as a child, driven by revenge and a hatred far greater than any fear or physical pain. His enormous sword (as tall as he is) and incredible skill attract the attention of Griffith, the leader of the Band of the Hawk, a group of mercenaries famous for their victories. Griffith recruits Guts and makes him a member of his band, which includes the other main characters: Casca, Judeau, Ricket, and Pippin, who are the closest to Guts.
