The fourth and final volume of The Ballad of the North marks the end of a short-lived revolution. With Largo Caballero imprisoned, Indalecio Prieto in France, and many other rebels dead or in hiding, the protagonists of this story wander through the mountains of Asturias in a cold winter of defeat. These pages furnish the entrance hall of a ruined house, the broken and emptied home of the Spanish Civil War of 1936. To understand how much hatred accumulated in those rooms, how much rage and pain its chambers harbored, one must first pass through here.
