France, 1939. In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac bids farewell to her husband, Antoine, who is about to leave for the front. She doesn't believe the Nazis will invade France, but they do, with battalions of soldiers marching through the streets, convoys of trucks and tanks, and planes filling the skies and dropping bombs on the innocent.
