Imagine yourself in the Cretaceous period. It's a sunny afternoon in Hell Creek, in ancient Montana, 66 million years ago. A Triceratops horridus wanders along the edge of the forest. In a matter of hours, everything here will be gone. The lush greenery will be replaced by fire. The Tyrannosaurus rex will be dethroned, along with all other non-avian dinosaur species, regardless of size, diet, or disposition. The cause of this cataclysm was identified decades ago. An asteroid more than 11 kilometers long slammed into Earth, leaving a geological scar more than 80 kilometers in diameter. In the terrible mass extinction that followed the impact, more than half of all known species vanished overnight. But that horrific day in the history of life on Earth was as critical for us as it was for the dinosaurs, for it opened up evolutionary opportunities that had been closed off for the past 100 million years.
