In 1935, a young English writer with a couple of novels under his belt, still searching for his own voice, met a smart, witty, and somewhat eccentric young Irish woman at a party, a woman with a solid academic background. He, Eric Blair, was already writing under the pseudonym George Orwell, and would later become the author of two seminal denunciations of totalitarianism: the novels Animal Farm and 1984. She, Eileen O’Shaughnessy, was a writer and poet, and would play a key role in Orwell's life and writing, as he was completely captivated by her after that first encounter. The couple married in June 1936, and at the end of that same year, Orwell traveled to Barcelona to "kill fascists." She came to rescue him a few months later, when the city had already become a dangerous hotbed of spies, informers, and political commissars.
