Nimona

In 2012, ND Stevenson, then an art student in his early twenties, started a webcomic based on a character he'd created for a class project. This character is Nimona, a rebellious young woman, aspiring sidekick to a villain, and an exceptional shapeshifter: she can transform into almost any living being in a matter of seconds. Although the supervillain Ballister Blackheart isn't thrilled about having "a kid" around, he eventually accepts her invaluable help. Nimona wants to carry out her evil plans as soon as possible; Blackheart, on the other hand, patiently and deliberately plots his revenge against his former partner, Ambrosius Lomodorado. In just a few pages, the reader is intrigued by the mysterious and troubled Nimona, surprised by Blackheart's strangely noble behavior, and captivated by the cleverness of a script that blends sensitivity, action, and plenty of humor. The young woman's inner struggle, the supervillain's efforts to understand her, and the mysteries of their pasts are some of the main elements of a plot that questions traditional understandings of basic concepts like beauty, power, and integrity. The medieval fantasy setting doesn't detract from the modernity of a narrative that will resonate with both today's teenagers and adults.
