While confusion reigns in the south, an ancient terror rises in the north. Maniye, daughter of the Wolf and Tiger clans, has proclaimed herself Champion of her people. But the tribes are unsure whether she is an asset or a threat. To buy time, she joins the mercenary band serving Prince Tecuman and heads south to support his claim to the throne. Maniye hopes to discover her place in the world, but instead, she is thrust headlong into a new and vicious succession conflict. Civil war erupts between Tecuman and his twin sister: both aspire to the crown, but only one can rule. Whoever triumphs will receive a poisoned gift, for a great calamity has been prophesied to befall the entire world. Soon, Maniye finds herself at the heart of a dynastic storm. Her former northern home also falls under the shadow of doom. The Bears' leader, Thunderstrong, aspires to unite the northern clans, but only an extreme challenge can end age-old rivalries. An adversary from the distant past prepares to attack, endangering their lands and their very souls. And neither north nor south will be spared the terror that is to come.
