Having finished her literature studies at university, Phyllida has had to move back in with her parents and scrapes by with a low-paying job at Heathrow Airport. Her fledgling plans to become a writer are currently stalled. Then one day, her mother invites an old family friend, Christopher Swann, over for dinner. He runs a political blog interested in obscure conspiracies and is investigating the machinations of a sinister group of experts, founded at Cambridge University in the 1980s. This group has been plotting to push the British government in a more extreme direction and is finally ready to act. As Britain finds itself under the leadership of a new prime minister whose term will last only seven weeks, Chris's investigation leads him to a conference being held deep in the Cotswolds. Although standing up to power can be dangerous, and power will stop at nothing to stay on top… So events take a sinister turn, and a murder investigation is soon underway. But does the solution to the mystery lie in contemporary politics or in a literary enigma from almost forty years ago?
