On the centenary of the Russian Revolution, Fabián, from Madrid, reminisces about his student years in Moscow at the legendary Patrice Lumumba International University of Peoples' Friendship. Now the owner of a struggling travel agency, an unexpected event, as he approaches his fifties, forces him to question his isolation from the group of fellow students with whom he shared those formative years so far from home and with whom he witnessed the collapse of the communist state. Sovietica recounts, with full awareness of the facts, the disintegration of the Soviet Union, told with humor and a healthy dose of bewilderment by a direct witness to a perestroika whose effects are still felt today.
