Scrubbing floors at a Metropolitan Police station isn't exactly what Elisabet dreamed of as a child in the orphanage; yet, as a poor woman with no family or resources, the options Victorian London offers her are hardly promising. However, taking advantage of the fact that no one pays her much mind—and relying on her own ingenuity—she has devised various ways to pursue her greatest passion: forensic science. One day, upon returning to her modest apartment, she finds an opportunity to turn her dreams into reality in the form of a mysterious package that draws her into the investigation of a British Royal Navy lieutenant's murder. With the help of friends she meets along the way, Elisabet must summon the courage to come to terms with her past and confront a killer obsessed with revenge.
