Café Budapest

Yechezkel Damjanich is a young Jewish violinist living with his mother in the desolate Budapest of 1947. One day, he receives a letter from Jerusalem sent by his uncle Yosef, from whom he hasn't heard in twelve years, and whom his mother despises for no apparent reason. Fleeing poverty, they arrive in Palestine during a turbulent political period, just before the British withdraw from the region. Uncle Yosef runs the Café Budapest, a quaint establishment near the Old Town, where Jews, Arabs, and Westerners coexist. It's an ephemeral oasis of harmony where the notes of Yechezkel's violin are soon drowned out by the roar of Davidka howitzers, Arab bombs, hatred, and destruction. The Café Budapest becomes a small stage reflecting the chaos and barbarity present throughout Palestine.
