“What kind of joke is this?” That’s what Lila wonders when, at twelve years old, her breasts begin to grow under her t-shirt. If she could, she’d rip them off. Lila has always known she’s a boy, which leads to incomprehension from her parents and friends: Is she a lesbian? Does she want to be a boy? How can she already be one? Gender dysphoria, sex reassignment, testosterone injections, a change on her birth certificate… At sixteen, Lila decides to embark on a difficult journey to become Nathan, the person she’s always been. Although others don’t understand, she’s clear about her sexual identity, without necessarily going under the knife: “I have a man’s vagina, and a penis in my head.”
