Investigating the Secret Service is as difficult as getting rid of the stench of a dead badger. For two years, the government investigation Monochrome has tried to uncover wrongdoing at MI5, only to find itself hit a series of dead ends. Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two officers assigned to the project, have unlimited access to the Service's classified files, but their work seems doomed. For decades, MI5 has covered up what happened in newly reunified Berlin, and intends to keep it that way. The investigation is floundering, and Griselda and Malcolm watch their careers sink in the relentless rain of London.
