Germany, 1939. At the start of the war, after her mother's death, Hanna Rombauer is sent to live with her aunt and uncle, immersing herself in a world of luxury she never imagined. She is soon betrothed to an SS officer, but the independence and tenacity her mother instilled in her clash with the regime's expectations of a future wife. Without consulting her, Hanna is sent to an elegant villa outside Berlin, where she is to be trained as the "ideal German wife." But the lessons, steeped in hatred, prejudice, and submission, soon awaken in her an urgent desire: to escape before she loses herself.
