The year is 390 BC. Rome trembles on the brink of collapse. After a humiliating defeat at the Battle of the Allia, the Gauls under Brennus storm the Eternal City, sowing panic among its inhabitants. The people flee in disarray, but a handful of nobles decide to entrench themselves on the Capitoline Hill to resist to the last breath. In the midst of this maelstrom of fire and steel, the Claudius Marcellus family embodies the uncertain fate of Rome: grandfather Vibius and his three grandsons, Manius, Titus, and Gaius, face paths separated by the violence of war. Titus, presumed dead, hides in the devastated city of Veii, where he dreams of revenge. Manius is sent to defend the Capitoline Hill, while young Gaius sets out for Ardea in search of the only man capable of saving the Republic: Marcus Furius Camillus, the exiled general.
