Beka lamb

Set in 1950s Belize, Beka Lamb tells the story of a teenage girl who, while grappling with loss and discovering her identity, reflects the tensions of a country moving toward independence. With a style that is understated and realistic yet sensitive to Creole oral traditions, Zee Edgell delivers a coming-of-age novel akin to the work of Merle Hodge or Jamaica Kincaid. And, much like Toni Morrison or Rosario Castellanos, Edgell places the female voice at the heart of collective memory, demonstrating that the personal and the political are inseparable in the literary construction of identity and nationhood.
