The mountains, peaks, and mountain ranges still hold some of the finest natural landscapes in our country. Their forested slopes, rock faces, and snow-capped summits are home to unique flora and fauna, worthy of observation and discovery: chamois that seem to enjoy surveying the world from the highest vantage points, colorful flowers that thrive in sub-zero temperatures, and clouds that linger on the prominent rocky outcrops of a distant yet utterly captivating landscape. This naturalist's field journal will take us on an excursion, up the mountainside, through the rugged heart of 25 high-altitude destinations in Spain, each more beautiful and distinct than the last: from the volcanic peak of Teide in the Canary Islands to the glacial valleys of the Pyrenees, passing through the peaks of the Guadarrama Mountains, the limestone massif of the Picos de Europa, the "corrales" of the Sierra Nevada, and the mountain ranges of Cazorla, Moncayo, and the Asturian mountains of Somiedo.
