A key figure in Greco-Roman historiography and a disciple of Epictetus, Arrian (c. 90-180) reconstructs in this 2nd-century work, also known as the "Anabasis," the campaigns of Alexander the Great from the crossing of the Hellespont to his death in Babylon at the age of thirty-two. The account covers crucial episodes such as the battles of the Granicus, Issus, and Gaugamela, the siege of Tyre, the conquest of Egypt, and the arrival at the Indus and the Hyphasis (the eastern limit of his expeditions). Based on now-lost sources, such as Ptolemy and Aristobulus, it offers a rigorous exposition, attentive to tactical and strategic aspects, and constitutes an exemplary testimony of how Antiquity constructed the memory of Alexander, the military genius who changed the map of world history.
