Imogen Nel has spent her entire life in hiding. Hiding from the cruel kingdom that sees mermaids as monstrous, bloodthirsty creatures. Hiding from its king and the savage captain who hunts her kind. All the while suppressing the power of her song, for staying away from the sea allows her to quell her bloodlust and keep her black wings folded beneath her skin. But after a visit from a neighboring king, everything falls apart. He knows who she is and is convinced that Imogen can save both kingdoms from a monster even more dangerous than herself. However, when her power threatens to surface, she and the king forge a blood bond that will allow them to flee together across the sea teeming with undead creatures. As the lines between duty and desire begin to blur, fearing that her ancient power won't be enough to vanquish the evil that haunts her, Imogen concludes that the only way to defeat the monster is to become one herself.
