Ismos del siglo XXI : Textos para entender el arte actual

How can we understand contemporary art? "New Isms of the 21st Century" seeks to answer this question by offering a unique reader that compiles 27 essential texts by leading national and international authors. Organized around six main themes, preceded by a general introduction, this book posits the existence of new "isms" in contemporary art that demand analytical foundations and a public voice for artistic practice: archivalism, activism, communitarianism, cosmopolitanism, indigenism, and ecologism. Each of these movements shares a rejection of formalism and a distancing from the strictly artistic; and their innovations and proposals stem not only from individual creativity but also from the need to construct theoretical frameworks consistent with reality. Furthermore, these movements situate creativity closer to the ethical than the aesthetic and borrow tools from social or anthropological projects. Starting from the artistic sphere as a place of thought and intervention that is interwoven with a whole series of theoretical references, authors such as Claire Bishop, Wolfgang Ernst, Helen Gilbert, Marsha Meskimmon, Nicholas Mirzoeff, Donna Haraway, Nicos Papastergiadis, Judith Butler, T. J. Demos or Ernst van Alphen, among many others, serve as a guide to understand the complexity of the artistic proposals of the 21st century.
