In the Civil War, as in the Great War, motorization made fuel an essential element. Oil and its derivatives were indispensable for mobilizing troops by land, sea, and air, and for setting the war machine in motion. The rebels against the Republic overcame the initial fuel shortage by exploiting pre-existing monarchist conspiracy networks and others that were newly created. Dense networks of espionage and business facilitated unlimited access to American oil and generated great fortunes—as well as corruption and complicity. But above all, new evidence presented in this work places international aid in the form of oil and its derivatives as one of the essential elements in General Francisco Franco's victory. Ángel Viñas adds a new piece, as well-documented as it is decisive, to the reconstruction and operation of the rebels' international agreements. In addition to allied fascist regimes, they enjoyed the complicity of representatives of big business and politicians from democratic nations.
