We know the main protagonists of July 18, 1936, such as Mola, Franco, and Queipo de Llano, who brought the Second Republic to its knees with their coup and the resulting civil war. However, behind these men were many other mid-level officials and even civilians who contributed to the victory of the rebel side. This book names those who made it possible in Zaragoza, a city that posed a major challenge for the coup plotters because it was the second most important urban center under their control, because of the established presence of leftist organizations, and because of its proximity to Catalonia. David Alegre examines the logic and workings of the systematic campaign of assassinations carried out by the rebel side in the city between the summer and autumn of 1936, which claimed the lives of some 3,500 civilians from across the province, most of them executed in the Aragonese capital. Based on an exhaustive research process, the book analyzes in detail who the main perpetrators of the executions were, from the highest-level meetings to the graves. Although they changed the course of Spanish history forever, most of them have gone unnoticed until now. Thus, readers have the opportunity to delve into the lives and motivations of two generations of men born between 1885 and 1915, all of whom were shaped by the key events of their time, from the loss of Cuba to the anxieties of the Second Republic.
