Clara Graysword has survived in the Eclipse City underworld through petty theft, luck, and illegal magic. However, when one of her jobs goes wrong, she ends up sentenced to life imprisonment for inking tarot cards, a rare power reserved for professionals at the elite Arcane Academy. Just when it seems her luck has run out, the academy's enigmatic headmaster, Prince Kaelis, offers her freedom in exchange for something. Kaelis is convinced that Clara is the right person to help him steal a tarot card from the king and use it to recreate an all-powerful card, long since lost. To conceal her identity and keep her under surveillance, Kaelis takes her to the Arcane Academy, where he introduces her as a first-year student and, also, as his fiancée.
